Fight Human Trafficking

The issue

Trafficking in human beings, especially women and girls is not new. It takes many forms: forced prostitution, forced labour, removal of organs or body parts, forced participation in criminal activities, forced marriage, exploitation for armed conflicts and so on; and today it affects approximately 27 million people. We are committed to the fight against human trafficking  supporting projects that raise awareness, helping communities to overcome the problems of poverty that fuel this issue, and freeing the victims of this modern day slavery.

Our work

Much of our work has been in Mumbai, India; where we have supported the work of the drop-in centre for prostitutes, located in the Red Light district.  There, the children of the sex workers are cared for, educated and fed, their mothers receive health checks, counselling and advice.  Through these activities relationships are built up enabling, in some cases, the opportunity to help women out of their enslavement.

The Salvation Army Australia has also extensively funded women’s Self Help Groups in towns and villages throughout India giving them the opportunity to raise income for their families.

A story

“Once we weren’t considered human.  We were seen as animals, we are commercial sex workers, the only source of income for our family.  After joining the Self Help group we are slowly withdrawing from this work.  We are earning money through leaf-plate making and petty shops to send our children to school.  We are earning the respect and acceptance of our community.”
